As we move into the holidays, I know there is outside pressure, as well as *internal* pressure that we put on ourselves to spend time with the people we *should* spend time with.
What many folks do not understand is that no matter how much “should” there is, it won’t make a difference for us.
There are people who DO NOT go home for the holidays for a reason. Or several reasons.
Some of us choose to stay away from unhealthy dysfunction, verbal assaults on our character and disrespectful people.
Some of us have worked hard & paid a lot of money to get ourselves out from under chaotic, terrifying and unreasonable situations.
Often we must create a new version of ourselves and become the authentic, truth telling person that WILL NOT tolerate BS. Once we do this, we can no longer allow ourselves to be around the people who continue to wallow in it.
Our mental wellness, our self care needs, our desire to maintain a healthy relationship with ourselves actually becomes more necessary than anything else.
Please know that many of us did not grow up behind a white picket fence and fluffy carpet on the floor.
Some of us slogged through numerous versions of hell to get to well.
No matter what day of the week, month or year it is, giving up that peace isn’t really an option we wish to pursue.
This holiday season enjoy the moments and the people you CHOOSE to spend it with.
