It’s so sad and disturbing to know that kids live in situations like this with little relief to be found.
We are groomed to keep the hoarding secret, to hide when the doorbell rings and make sure we never invite people over.
The odor of the hoard is unmistakable.
It clings to our clothes and our school backpacks. It results in things like bullying, social isolation and additional trauma.
Hoarding in its most destructive form is abuse.
Some kids have nowhere to sleep because their bed and bedroom is filled with their parents “stuff.” Some kids deal with infestations like rodents, cockroaches, bed bugs or fleas. Some kids aren’t allowed to bathe regularly or wash their hair frequently.
Social isolation and the inability to reciprocate invitations to things such as slumber parties or play dates is difficult to deal with as a child.
When you see a “hoarded home,” please look deeper.
You might find a desperate kid inside.
